About Neocate
Neocate is one formula brand that you can opt if your baby is suffering from cow’s milk allergy, which makes them can’t consume milk at any cost. The reason for this allergy is usually the protein in milk that triggers the body to set off allergic reaction. The allergy may be inherited from the parents or other family member that have allergic disease like hay fever, asthma, and food allergies. Another cause is when the baby came in contact with cow’s milk protein very early in life through the mother diet.

The symptoms that may occur if your baby is having cow’s milk allergy are skin rash, crying, diarrhea, wheezing, colic, vomiting or restless sleep. These symptoms are always have some harmless explanation to them, but just to be sure, you have to ask your doctor whether they have an allergy or not. Another way to make sure if they are having CMA is by removing dairy from their diet for a week and see the result.

Neocate itself has several product for CMA but its formula is called Neocate LCP, which is the focus in this article. The product claim is it is not made to replace breast milk but as a substitute if you are unable to breastfed your baby. It is designed to have complete nutrition, means it will support your baby’s growth and development as required if taken in the correct amounts. Beside the formula, the brand also offer solid medical food for infants older than 6 months.

Neocate Ingredients
Since Neocate is made to help baby with cow’s milk allergy, the ingredients used are also different from regular formula. This formula used or based on 100% non-allergenic amino acids, such as L-Aspartate, L-Arginine, L-Leucine, L-Glutamine, and L-Lysine Acetate. Similar like any other formulas, they also used some plant based oils, such as coconut oil, refined vegetable oils, and high oleic sunflower oil as the fat source. As the carbohydrate source, instead of lactose that is found in cow’s milk Neocate use dried glucose syrup.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein chains and doesn’t contain anything that may trigger allergy if your baby can’t receive cow’s milk protein, so it will be far safer for even the severe case of cow’s milk allergy. Another option to deal with CMA is soy-based formula but, 8-14% of baby that reacts to milk protein also have the same reaction to soy. Another option is extensively hydrolyzed formula but it may not suitable for severe allergy.

About Nutramigen
Nutramigen is also a good option to choose if your baby is having a cow’s milk allergy but the condition is not too severe or still can take some part of milk protein. The formula itself is designed to deal with the colic effect due to cow’s milk protein allergy and claimed to work quickly only within 48 hours after they are being fed with the formula. Unlike many other formula, this one only available in liquid and concentrated liquid without powder variant.

If your baby is having a cow’s milk allergy, it is best to just breastfeed them but since you are concerning about formula, chances are you may not able to do so for various reasons. Another option before opting for extensively hydrolyzed formula like Nutramigen is usually soy based formula since it doesn’t contain cow’s milk protein, but since some baby also have the same reaction with soy, hydrolyzed and extensively hydrolyzed or amino acids based formula are the safer option.

Nutramigen Ingredients
Nutramigen itself is an extensively hydrolyzed formula or hypoallergenic, which still offer complete nutrition for infants who not able to digest intact cow’s milk protein. Since it is a hypoallergenic formula, the ingredients used are also s bit different than found in regular formulas. The prominent difference is of course its protein source, Nutramigen used casein hydrolysate, which is derived from cow’s milk. In milk, there are two proteins present; casein and whey. For another similar formula, check Gerber Extensive HA vs Nutramigen here.

Both of them build the protein in cow’s milk. Casein is called slow protein for it will need a longer time to be digested than Whey that is digested quite faster in the body, so you can expect your baby will feels fuller longer when consuming casein based formula rather than whey based. Hydrolyzed itself is a process of hydrolyzing means the casein have already passed a break down process to make it into smaller pieces. The smaller casein is seen as a substance that won’t trigger allergic reaction compared to regular intact protein.

Similar like many other regular formula out there, Nutramigen also use corn syrup solids as its carbohydrate source to make your baby full longer as well as to improve the formula taste. As the fat source, it used a mix of plant based oils, like palm oil, soy oil, coconut oil, and high oleic sunflower oil.

Now, let’s compare Neocate with Nutramigen. The prominent difference between these two is the protein source. As we know, Neocate is amino acids base formula, so it doesn’t use protein from cow’s milk while at the other side, Nutramigen is still using Casein, which is derived from cow’s milk, so even though both of them are hypoallergenic, they are different. Another difference is the formula form since, Neocate is only available in powder form while Nutramigen is only available in concentrated liquid and ready to use liquid.

Neocate vs Nutramigen

- Amino acids based formula- Extensively hydrolyzed casein based
- For severe cow’s milk allergy- For moderate cow’s milk allergy
